November 2004
When June Wispelwey’s company was acquired by another organization, she found herself in need of career coaching. After trying the outplacement firm paid for by her former employer, she chose instead to work with Kelleher Associates, Inc. to develop the plan needed to land a new position.
How did you first get to know Kelleher Associates, Inc.?
Mitch Wienick came to my Princeton alumni networking meeting and gave a speech on what C-level executives look for in senior managers. He and I kept in touch after that and when my company was acquired and all senior management positions, including my own, were terminated, he was the one I thought to contact.
Did your former employer send you to Kelleher Associates?
No, they actually paid to send me to a national outplacement agency with a different philosophy from mine. Their way was to service everyone together, from secretary to senior executive. I was a vice president and I needed personalized attention. I felt like I did more of the talking in the classes than the “teacher” did.
I decided to use Kelleher Associates on my own and chose to pay for them rather than go with the outplacement firm paid for by my previous employer.
Why did you choose Kelleher?
I felt that they could help me tailor my presentation to the marketplace and create a customized resume. I also thought that the clientele was more senior than some of the other outplacement firms in the area.
You had an interesting background. How did Mitch help you focus on specific functional areas?
Mitch helped me narrow my focus down to two areas and develop two distinct resumes. From there we looked at potential opportunities and my interests and really narrowed it down to one key area, which for me was marketing. Mitch really helped me go through this whole process and in the end, with his guidance, let me figure it out on my own.
You went from working for a major corporation to working for a non-profit organization. Did Kelleher help you make this transition?
Definitely. Mitch was instrumental in helping me develop and request a comprehensive compensation package that works for me. I commute to New York City twice and week and work from home three days a week and am very pleased with my overall situation and compensation.
What was most valuable about your Kelleher experience?
I knew from my prior experience how to market products but I did not really know how to market myself. Mitch taught me how to market myself as a product, which is something I never had to do before. Kelleher Associates really works with you on everything you need to help you find your next position. They have a whole system down and it works.
Kelleher Associates also works with you on your transition to your new position. They make sure that you realize that getting the job is not the end and help you prepare for success in your new position.
Would you recommend Kelleher Associates?
Yes. In addition to giving you an organized approach to your job search, you are not just another number. They really care about you and it shows. I also appreciated the contact I had with other senior Kelleher clients.
