Kelleher Associates Inc., Wayne, PA Client Testimonials

From time to time we interview a client or former client about his or her career transition and their experience with Kelleher Associates.

August 2005

Marguerite Deutsch is a successful Marketing and Product Manager in consumer gods, with a proven record of sales growth, new product launches and brand management. For her, the challenge would be finding the right fit in the Philadelphia area.

How did you connect with Kelleher Associates, Inc.?
My former employer (Mannington Mills, Inc.) has had a long standing relationship with Kelleher. The day I was notified of my separation, I met a key member of the Kelleher team (Al Kramer). I found Al’s professionalism very reassuring. I welcomed his emotional support and practical advice on what was a difficult day for me.

Was Al Kramer your coach as you went through the transition process?
No. My “lead” coach was Lee Curry, a very fine and well-experienced individual. He helped me fine tune my networking methods and techniques. But I had access to the rest of the coaches as well (Ed Kelleher, Al and Mitch Wienick).

What did you find most helpful about the process?
It was the overall supportive environment. I used the offices regularly. It kept me positive, focused and energized. I bonded with other clients there. We formed a caring, mutually supportive group. Sometimes I was able to provide encouragement to a colleague; sometimes it was I who was being encouraged. We all cared about each other, shared leads and sometimes shared laughs, too.

What were your concerns going into this transition?
Even though I had been through a search only two years prior, and had established contacts in my industry, I realized that opportunities in my field—in this region—were limited and that it would take time and perseverance to uncover an ideal opportunity.

How did you land your job?
I worked my network. One of my contacts introduced me to someone who suggested I target Luminarc. They weren’t initially on my radar screen. As I looked into the company, I realized that I had worked with the VP of Marketing person elsewhere, earlier in my career. One thing led to another and I uncovered and landed a Brand Manager position with Luminarc in less than three months.

How do you feel about the fit?
It’s a great fit. Beside Mannington, I had earlier experience with Waterford, Lenox and Lightolier. Luminarc is a high end consumer housewares company that competes with Libby, Anchor Hocking, etc. It’s an industry I know well and enjoy.

What was the most important thing you learned going through this transition?
Use your network, not only during the job search, but be sure to keep it active after you’ve landed, too. I surely intend to. I absolutely plan to stay in touch with the people at Kelleher – not only the Kelleher team but other clients who have become friends as well.
