Rich Plush
Kelleher Associates gave me the support and guidance I needed to make the best of a difficult situation, feel good about myself throughout the process, and land squarely on my feet.
October 2006
Rich was previously chief actuary at Pennsylvania Mutual Insurance Company. He is leveraging his skills in his new role with the Knights of Columbus in a comparable position with an increase in responsibility and dollars.
You came from a company that had an alternate outplacement provider. How did you wind up at Kelleher?
Colleagues and friends mentioned that they had talked to Ed Kelleher and recommended that I do likewise. Coincidentally, at the same time, another colleague found Ed and also shared his positive impressions with me. I respected these sources and knew I should listen to their recommendation.
How would you describe your first meeting with Ed?
Ed helped me even before I committed to working with Kelleher. He was genuine and clearly accustomed to dealing with executive level clients seeking senior positions. At that point, I could see that the Kelleher program would be tailored to me. I felt secure in knowing that I could count on the personal attention.
You have spoken to the uniqueness of Kelleher. What is the one attribute that for you is the most valuable?
Again, I would have to say the personal one-on-one attention. Ed took the time to understand the environment I came from and what I was specifically looking for in my next position. He understood the industry and the intricacies and nuances of the position.
Would you describe a bit more about the process?
Ed probed and asked deep questions in order to really understand what I do and what I was going for. He offered contacts in my industry and also with folks at similar levels in other industries to expand my universe of contacts.
How did you find the environment at Kelleher?
I was pleased to see the level of support from other candidates. I found a sympathetic ear, helpful suggestions about networking, and advice with respect to resources at my disposal. We shared our frustrations and our encouragement. I was not doing this alone.
For you, what was the greatest lesson learned?
When I was first let go, I felt alone, almost as if I had done something wrong. I learned that this was not the personal attack that it seemed and that losing a job happens to many.
What was your biggest challenge?
Being in an industry that is contracting. There are fewer insurance companies and therefore fewer opportunities.
How long was your search?
My search from beginning to end took just over six months.
To what do you attribute that?
Good guidance and feedback, sharpened interviewing skills, hard work and preparation, revisiting my network sometimes 2-3 times, a lot of emails, and a nice dose of good luck.
Would you recommend Kelleher to others?
I already have! A friend of mine has already enlisted Kelleher to help manage his transition.
